One Person was never supposed to be The whole team.

The Curated Misfits assembles identity-first brand and marketing teams for nonprofits, small businesses and founders.

Strategy. Messaging. Design. Photography. Video. Digital Marketing. Implementation. Built by specialists and connected by one clear blueprint.

It was never a how-to problem.
It was a capacity problem.

the origin

Santa Cruz, CA

before I had language for it.

The Curated Misfits began before I knew what to call it.

I was working for a nonprofit whose mission and vision I deeply believed in. During a retreat in Santa Cruz, California, the CEO and I were butting heads–not because we didn’t care but because we both cared deeply about what the organization could become.

At the time, I was responsible for photography, brand strategy, videography, recording and editing the podcast, creating content, scheduling social media posts, redesigning the website and whatever else needed to be communicated that week.

I knew how to do the work.

That was not the problem.

I was only one person. One person cannot be a whole department.

When we brought in a videographer, photographer and public relations support, the organization grew. The storytelling became stronger. Our reach expanded exponentially. More became possible.

The growth didn’t happen because one person learned to do more.

It happened because we started working together.

The capacity problem

your marketing problem may not be lack of knowledge.

It may be that too much work has been given to too few people.

Many small businesses and nonprofits hire one person and expect them to function as an entire department.

the problem is not always the person.

sometimes the problem is the structure.

THE OVERLOADED EMPLOYEE

One person is responsible for an entire department and has no time to think strategically.

THE DISCONNECTED FREELANCER MODEL

Several people complete separate assignments but nobody connects the work.

One person may have the ability to touch several of these areas. That doesn’t mean one person has the capacity to perform all of them well at the same time.

The client pays for significant overhead, rigid packages and layers of people they rarely meet.

THE TRADITIONAL AGENCY MODEL

The Curated Misfits was created to provide another option.

The Misfit model

one blueprint.

The right specialists.

one connected team.

At the center of everything we do is Identity Architecture. It’s the blueprint that aligns strategy, messaging and creative so every specialist works from the same foundation.

We curate the right people for the problem, not the other way around.

A curated metwork of trusted specialists led by one shared strategy.

We don’t place every specialist on every project. We identify the problem, establish the strategy and curate the team around what the work actually requires.

THE MISFIT METHOD™

01

LISTEN & DIAGNOSE

We learn the organization, the people, the mission and the real problem behind the requested deliverable.

02

ARCHITECT THE IDENTITY

We define the position, audience, message, promise, personality and strategic direction.

03

CURATE THE TEAM

We identify the specialists the project actually requires.

04

CREATE COLLABORATIVELY

Every specialist builds from the same identity blueprint instead of working in isolation.

05

LAUNCH & IMPLEMENT

We bring the strategy into the website, content, campaign, customer experience or organization.

06

MEASURE & REFINE

We determine what is creating clarity, trust, qualified attention and movement—and strengthen it.

Multiple people do not become a team simply because they are assigned to the same project. The blueprint is what connects them.

PROOF IS IN THE WORK

WE HELP ORGANIZATIONS TURN COMPLEXITY INTO CLARITY AND CLARITY INTO GROWTH.

you don’t need to keep carrying the whole department.

Tell us what you’re trying to build, what has been sitting unfinished and where your current team needs support.

We’ll help identify the real problem and determine which specialists belong in the room.
